Find your natural
confidence for languages
"I was terrified of communicating in a new language"
You want to connect with people… so why does it sometimes feel so scary to speak your new language with a real human being?
I speak five languages to a high level, and I'll happily hop on Skype to chat with native speakers of any language I'm learning.
But it hasn't always been that way.
Until quite recently, I felt really insecure speaking in another language. I'd sometimes arrange a conversation in my target language, but I'd get so nervous that I'd feel close to panic. Because of my nerves, I couldn't understand the other person. I'd feel bad about wasting their time, and sometimes I'd just end the call. Nothing came naturally, and when speaking to someone face-to-face, I just felt embarrassed.
So, I avoided speaking and focused on learning new vocabulary, reading and listening.
I now know that this drastically slowed down my learning, and I've worked out that I’ve wasted hundreds of hours of study time because of my low confidence. My progress was much, much slower than it could have been, if only I'd had the courage to speak.
And it wasn't just language learning. How many of us have felt a flood of anxiety before a work Skype call, a job interview, or even just meeting a group of friends?
My low confidence even impacted my music career – I felt terrified and downright uncomfortable being on stage and performing.
The worst part is, many of us let these experiences become the story of who we are. I know this happened to me. I'd tell myself that I wasn't "naturally" confident, unlike others in the music industry.
You’ve probably been there too – kicking yourself at how your language learning (or your whole life) could be so different, if only you had a natural, easy confidence.
You've probably heard the advice: "The best way to learn a new language is to speak it".
I know when I first heard this, I felt sure "that's not for me."
Only when I really gave the "speak from day one" advice a proper try did I discover just how powerful speaking a new language can be. Not only did my language learning accelerate – it also gave a HUGE boost to my confidence.
The problem? "Speak from day one" sounds simple, but how should you go about it? What if you're terrified of meeting new people on Skype? Or you feel stupid and self-conscious every time you make a mistake?
I was only able to put "speak from day one" into practice because I spent years learning specific techniques to build my confidence.
I identified a few simple beliefs that held me back, and discovered some key insights that completely changed my approach when I'm speaking another language.
Learning a new language - especially when you’re taking the first steps - means crossing all kinds of hurdles. Many of these hurdles you’ll be facing for the first time. It takes courage to keep jumping. And jumping. And falling. And jumping. Again and again and again.
“Courage” sounds like a big thing to find. And when you see someone else with natural confidence, you can feel like you’ll never reach that point.
In truth, the confidence to speak a new language is made of a few small building blocks – mindset shifts you can apply one at a time - until you’ve built a natural courage. You’ll look back and marvel at your progress – "how did I get here?"
I spend a lot of my time on stage in front of people, talking on a microphone, and networking after events. To someone on the outside, it seems like there’s no way I could ever have been socially awkward. And when the fact that I've struggled with confidence comes up in conversation, a lot of people roll their eyes. The truth is, it took me effort and focus to reach where I am today, but it was worth it.
In this course, you'll learn the exact mindset shifts you'll need to make to gradually build your natural confidence. Plus you'll discover how to bust through the barriers of anxiety and doubt that hold you back.
And then I'll show you how to practice these mindset shifts so they become second-nature. In no time, you'll be blending the building blocks of confidence into your everyday life.
What if you could use the power of inner confidence to connect with native speakers in your target language and have real conversations – even if you've just started learning?
